WARNING! Kidnapping or Injured Loved One Hoax Calls on the Rise

 WARNING!!

KIDNAPPING OR INJURY HOAX CALLS ON THE RISE

There have been several reported hoax abduction calls in Weston since December

2016, regarding supposedly abducted or injured juveniles.  During some of the calls,

the caller demanded money to be wired to an account in Puerto Rico.  Some include

a story about a loved one being in an accident rather than being kidnapped.  All

include a demand for money to be wired immediately.

The call is terrifying for a parent or family member.  The recent scenarios involve a

caller with a Spanish accent, stating they have abducted the son or daughter.  The

caller places someone that is screaming/crying on the phone but then takes the

phone back before they are identifiable.  The caller makes a ransom demand or

other demand for payment.

The FBI has seen this hoax around the country, yet the Weston community has experienced an uptick in this activity in the last few months.

On April 26th, Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer, along with Chief Kevin Butler of the Broward Sheriff's Office Weston District and other BSO officials addressed the media to educate the community on the hoax calls, as a follow-up to the City's news article in its Newsday Tuesday newsletter on April 4th.

Tips for Parents:

  • Stay Calm.  Try to slow the situation down and use common sense to feel the caller out.

  • Do not share names. It is likely they do not know you or your loved one and are playing on your immediate fear to lead you to take action.

  • Ask for Proof of Life.  Request to speak to the victim directly.

  • Confirm Loved Ones Whereabouts.  Try and reach your loved one on another phone or social media while the call is still active.

  • Do Not Send Money or Meet with caller.  Call 9-1-1.
