RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY
At 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 1, 2021, the Bonaventure Fire Rescue Station 21 was dedicated 'FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PEOPLE OF WESTON' which is engraved on the dedication plaque that hangs on the exterior front entrance.
This station has been a long time in the making. Back 16 years ago, in 2005, an ISO review of the City was performed with the intent of obtaining a Class 1 rating. Upon that review by the Insurance Services Office, the City was .85 points short of obtaining a Class 1 rating. The shortfall was attributed to the lack of an Engine Company in the Bonaventure community to improve response times to this community and bring that response time in line with the remainder of the City.
It was 22 years ago that the first two fire stations in Weston were opened. Stations #67 and #81 opened in 1999. It was so long ago that all three of our fire stations were renovated over the past two years due to the 24 hours a day, 365 days a year use.
City Manager Don Decker stated, " Here we are today, standing in arguably the nicest firehouse in the City of Weston, and dare I say the County. We have completed our fire infrastructure which will ensure response times that are comparable for all residents."
Mayor Margaret Brown thanked all of the first responder present. "It is unfortunate that oftentimes it takes tragedies such as the one south Florida is experiencing right now – the condo collapse in Surfside - or the World Trade Center - to bring focus on the dedication, commitment and literally life-threatening challenges that the men and women of the Fire Service, and all first responders, must face. We thank you for your service, your professionalism and skills that you constantly hone and perfect."
She went on to say, "The world needs Heroes. Now more than ever. People to run INTO burning buildings; tunnel through tons of rubble for survivors; cut victims from cars; or save scared kittens from trees. These things don’t occur haphazardly either. They are meticulously organized and highly technical. Most of us have an automatic response that protects us and tells us to flee from danger, in other words run AWAY from a fire. First Responders run towards the danger, and we cannot thank you enough. The least we can do is provide you with comfortable accommodations."
To Saltz Michelson Architects, Owner Representative Cartaya & Associates and Builder, LINK Construction - BRAVO for coming in on time (actually early) and under budget. The facility is top notch. To our City staff and contractors, including Chief Draizin and Karl Thompson, who managed the project so diligently, a great round of thanks for a job extremely well done.

Bonaventure Fire Station No. 21 - Time Lapse Video:
Construction began in July 2020, as contractors (LINK Construction) for the City of Weston initiated construction on the first fire station to be built in the Bonaventure area of the City. This station will be known as Bonaventure Fire Rescue Station 21, located at 275 Bonaventure Boulevard.
The construction site was fenced and screened. Construction took place between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and construction was anticipated to take 12 months to complete in its entirety. The project includes a one-story building of 11,561 sq. ft. of interior space. It has three apparatus bays, sleeping rooms, a kitchen, bathrooms, fitness space, standby power and other elements of a typical fire station.
STATS:
Building Height - 25 Feet
Elevation - 9.0 above sea level
Total Site Area - 2.23 acres (56% is open space/landscaping)
Final completion in 360 calendar days
TREES ON THE FIRE STATION SITE:
A total of nine trees were removed; two Strangler fig (Banyan trees) one of which was growing around a Sabal Palm, and six Jamaican Dogwoods that were also in poor condition. Although the Strangler fig were large, they did not have good branch structure. The City relocated five of the oak trees in the center median and six triple Alexander Palms that were in good shape to Racquet Club Road, in front of the new Bonaventure Park.
The Fire Station now has 152 trees planted on its grounds providing a well landscaped site and privacy for its neighbors.
The strategic location of Fire Station 21 will help reduce response time to its primary zones and provides for improved critical infrastructure of the Fire Rescue Division. The drive through apparatus bays provides for an improved distribution of the emergency apparatus and an improved allocation of resources.
The Fire Station was officially dedicated on July 1, 2021 and opened on July 3, 2021.
